Age of Heroes
Lieutenant Ignar Rants'son, of the Fireforge Clan
A born Soldier, Ignar is large for a Dwarf, with thick black hair, slate grey eyes, and a gloriously-maintained black beard. He is strangely open and talkative, for a Dwarf, but just remember - he has an Axe, and the skill to use it.

Ignar was born into the Fireforge clan, the middle child of three. At a young age he was trained to become a backup successor to lead the clan if his brother Karm were to die, but when his beard started growing in, this all stopped. For, you see, whereas the rest of clan Fireforge have jet black beards, Ignar’s was of a lighter brown shade, the same as that of King Stannig himself.
There were various political machinations afoot at the time, but when things settled clan Fireforge had been placed at a high position in the council of elders, seemingly second only to King Stannig himself. This was also the time at which Rant, clan leader of the Fireforge clan, pledged his eternal support for the King, as did each of his sons in turn.
As for Ignar, his mother showed him how to dye his beard a more normal colour, and from that day forth he appeared in public as what he was, the second son to the clan’s head.
At first Rant was at a loss as to what to do with his second ‘son’, but after one of his rivals on the council tried to kill Ignar (as a statement, as it were), he decided to put Ignar’s developing muscles to another use: train him as a warrior, and hope he garners glory and an early demise.
When King Stannig heard that a settlement had been started nearby he sent his trusted second to investigate and respond. Thus it was that Rant took Ignar, still in his early thirties, to Riverbrook.
Rant, understanding immediately the advantages of having a trading town within easy reach, took advantage of the large market it opened up. He and the then new mayor Christenson made a trade agreement: a regular shipment of weapons made from good Dwarven steel in exchange for those commodities that were either rare or nonexistant in Festung Stormfist. Thus Fireforge weapons became one of the standards by which other weapons in this area were compared (similar to the Colt brand of guns in America).
It was during this foray that Ignar developed a love for the new and different. He wanted to see these human lands and experience these aliens for himself. After returning to Stormfist he persuaded his father to let him go adventure in these lands. Rant agreed, and after a few weeks Ignar was commissioned to serve in the Serben army. Over time his position in the ranks has slowly risen, and occasionally fallen. Risen due to him showing great bravery in the face of danger, and fallen whenever he got involved in a public brawl.
To be honest, those few brawls were never his fault. He would see someone being picked on, feel he had to impose, and instead of everyone backing down (which often happened when a solid wall of muscle wanted you to do so), someone would throw a dumb punch, and things would degenerate.
Still, Ignar developed a name for himself as someone that would not allow injustice to prevail, which simultaneously enamoured him to his men (when he had charge of any) and prevented him from achieving high rank (as most of those at that level did not get there by their own efforts, and were distrustful of anyone that looked like they could do so).
Over the years he went on to develop a bond of friendship with, of all people, an Elf. They were both lovers of adventure and wanderlust, and when they were forced to work together they soon saw past each other’s inherent prejudices and recognised a kindred spirit. For the next ten years they formed a team, sometimes with Ignar in command, sometimes with Illandre in charge, but mostly with them both busted down to the same level. He taught Illandre Dwarvish, which Illandre spoke with a laudible lisp and soft tongue, whilst Illandre taught him to speak Elvish, which Ignar butchered in his usual way. Each despaired of the other’s facility in their language, but it did occasionally come in useful if they needed to talk in private.
It was during yet another battle against the Orcs that tragedy befell Illandre, courtesy of an Ogre’s war club. Ignar was inconsolable for months after that, eventually being broken down to the rank of private and almost given a dishonourable discharge, but eventually he recovered his wits and got down to the serious business of soldiering again.
Thus, a few years later, and a few honourable mentions in action, he found himself a part of Estaban’s royal guard at the time that troubles rose around Riverbrook. He was one of the men Estaban brought North to Riverbrook, and remains stationed with the rest of his men. He was surprised and pleased to see that Loric was still the mayor here, though he was saddened to hear that his son had died – he remembered playing ring toss with the lad, and remembered his eternally messed hair and rash mannerisms fondly.
1) Ignar can be placed in almost any rank, but to fit into the campaign here he will probably need to be a Private.
2) Fireforge steel is renowned in this area. The militia weapons are almost certainly going to be of Fireforge steel, as is most of the non-magical weaponry of anyone important in Riverbrook (apart from family heirlooms, at any rate).
3) Ignar is overly proud of his beard, and spends a lot of time grooming it using a variety of unguents.
4) For all his learings, he still has difficulty reading and writing. His writing takes ages to do (on the order of one character a second) and in order to read he needs to both ‘use a finger’ and to read aloud.
5) Ignar is fiercely loyal to those in command over him, which at the moment are (in order of importance) King Stannig, Rant Fireforge, Commander Estaban and King Serben.
6) Ignar feels very protective of the ‘common folk’, and indeed anyone below him in rank. He has been given the abilities he has in order to keep the world safe. Each and every one in it, no matter who they are. He wants to see a world without Orcan threat. Peace in his time. .
